Your AC Isn't Cooling in a Lahore Heatwave? Check These 5 Things Before You Call

When Lahore is sitting at 45°C, the last thing you want is an AC that is running but making your room feel like an oven.

Before you call an AC technician and spend money on a service visit, take a few minutes to check some simple things yourself. In many cases, the problem is not a major fault. A dirty filter, blocked outdoor unit, low voltage, or clogged drain can be enough to make your AC struggle in extreme summer heat.

Here is a quick checklist you can follow.

1. Check the AC filter first

This takes less than a minute and does not require any tools.

Turn off the AC and open the front panel of your indoor unit. You will normally find one or two mesh filters underneath. Slide them out carefully and look at them against the light.

If you can barely see through the mesh because it is covered in dust, your AC is working harder than it should.

Take the filters outside, gently tap off the dust, then rinse them with clean water. Let them dry completely before putting them back.

Do not reinstall a wet filter. Moisture can cause unpleasant smells and other problems.

If you have not cleaned your filters for weeks, this is one of the first things worth checking.

2. Make sure the outdoor unit can breathe

Your split AC needs good airflow around the outdoor unit to release the heat it has removed from your room.

Go outside and check the area around the condenser.

Look for things such as:

• Grass or plants growing around the unit
• Pots or boxes placed too close to it
• Plastic sheets or other objects blocking the fan
• Excessive dust on the condenser coil
• Water collecting around the unit

This is especially worth checking in houses with outdoor units installed in small backyards, balconies, or side passages around DHA and Bahria Town.

Do not try to open the outdoor unit or clean electrical components yourself. Simply make sure nothing is blocking the airflow.

3. Check the voltage, not just whether the electricity is on

This is an important one during a Lahore heatwave.

Your AC may turn on normally even when the supply voltage is too low for efficient cooling.

During periods of heavy electricity demand, voltage fluctuations can become more noticeable. Your lights may still be working and your AC may still be running, but the compressor may not be operating properly.

If you have a reliable voltage meter and know how to use it safely, check the supply according to your AC manufacturer's requirements. Do not open the AC or touch exposed electrical wiring to take a measurement.

If you regularly notice your AC struggling during peak hours and working better later at night, voltage fluctuation could be worth investigating.

For electrical testing, it is safer to have a qualified technician check the supply and the AC itself.

4. Check the drain pipe

Look at the small drain pipe coming from your indoor AC unit.

If the drain is blocked, water can build up inside the indoor unit. Many modern split and inverter AC systems have protection mechanisms that can stop the system when drainage becomes a problem.

You may notice water leaking from the indoor unit, unusual dripping, or the AC stopping unexpectedly.

Do not poke wires or dismantle the indoor unit to clear a blockage. If the drain is clearly blocked or water is backing up, get it cleaned properly.

A blocked drain is usually much easier and cheaper to deal with than a compressor or refrigerant problem.

5. Do not assume the AC needs gas immediately

One of the most common assumptions we hear is:

"My AC is not cooling, so it probably needs gas."

Not necessarily.

Refrigerant should not normally disappear from a properly sealed AC system. If the refrigerant level is low, there may be a leak somewhere that needs to be identified.

Before assuming it is a gas problem, look at the symptoms.

This is why simply adding gas without checking the system can be a temporary fix at best.

When should you actually call a technician?

There are some situations where DIY troubleshooting should stop.

Call a professional if you notice burning smells, electrical sparks, unusual compressor noises, repeated tripping of the breaker, refrigerant leaking, or significant water leakage from the indoor unit.

Also call a technician if your AC is running continuously but cannot bring the room temperature down despite having good airflow and clean filters.

A professional can check the refrigerant pressure, electrical supply, compressor performance, condenser and evaporator coils, drainage system, and other components properly.

Before you spend money, check the simple things

A Lahore heatwave puts enormous pressure on your AC. But not every cooling problem means your compressor has failed or that you need an expensive repair.

Start with the filter. Check the outdoor airflow. Consider the voltage. Look at the drain. Then observe how the AC behaves before deciding what needs to be repaired.

If you have gone through the checklist and your AC is still not cooling properly, it is probably time to get it inspected rather than continuing to guess.
